Introducing Silas Hays

Silas Hays is a highly skilled and experienced Safety Management Systems (SMS) Diagnostic Reviewer, Designer and SMS Key Skills Coach, with in-depth knowledge of regulations, compliance and safety culture across civilian, commercial and military sectors. With experience of designing and auditing various individual elements and entire Safety Management Systems, he has 25+ years in Aeronautical Airworthiness and Engineering, Project/Programme Management (PRINCE2 & APMP qualifications), Quality Management and Lead Auditing (ISO accredited) experience

Si’s major achievements include:

  • Designing the Trials Evaluation Services and Targets (TEST) Project Team’s SMS to incorporate both the MRCOA Fleet at Boscome Down and all Naval/Army/Air Force ranges across the UK
  • Designing and supporting implementation of the SMSs for: Boeing Defence UK, Thales UK, Cobham, Airborne Systems (now Irvin GQ), Elbit Systems UK and Retro Track and Air.
  • Drafting the Achieving Excellence CAMO Orders and creating 5 tools to standardise and assist all MoD CAMOs improve their performance
  • Reviewing all safety information for the Royal Navy’s 1st Sea Lord and designing a dashboard to improve information flow
  • Regularly speaking at various conferences including the Flight Global Safety Conference and the Royal Aeronautical Society Human Factors Symposiums
  • Receiving the Sir Alan Cobham Award for introducing an International Civil Aviation Organisation Safety Management System (approved by the Civil Aviation Authority)
