Ninety years ago, a prototype aircraft took to the skies that would go on to redefine air combat and set new benchmarks for engineering excellence.

The Spitfire is more than a fighter aircraft. It represents exceptional design thinking, rigorous testing and coordinated teamwork.

Its elliptical wings delivered an optimal balance of lift and drag, giving it speed and agility. Its all-metal monocoque structure was lighter and stronger than most contemporaries, ensuring both durability and its unmistakable silhouette.

Over its life, the Spitfire evolved through more than 20 major marks and numerous sub variants. Each evolution relied on engineers, technicians, and airworthiness specialists whose expertise kept the aircraft safe, reliable, and mission ready across multiple roles.

“Having admired the Spitfire from a young age and worked closely with it during my RAF career, I’ve always been struck by the extraordinary engineering behind every aircraft. Its continual evolution is a reminder of what meticulous engineering, rigorous airworthiness, and collaborative teams can achieve. These are principles we live by every day at SQEP.” Martin Godwin, Senior Airworthiness & Certification Consultant

Why it still matters

  • Over 20 major marks developed across its service life
  • Operated by more than 20 air forces worldwide
  • Adapted for multiple roles: fighter, reconnaissance, training, and ground attack
  • Remained operational into the 1950s

At SQEP Ltd, the Spitfire embodies values we hold dear: precision, collaboration, and mission-critical expertise. Just as generations of engineers and pilots refined and sustained the aircraft, our veteran-led, values-driven teams continue to deliver clarity, stability, and impact on complex defence and aerospace programmes, applying the same principles of rigorous engineering and collaborative excellence that remain relevant today.
