Challenge
A major Defence client needed to ensure the safety and compliance of mission-critical Air Traffic Management (ATM) software, which supports real-time European air operations. Given the safety-critical nature of these systems, compliance with international standards such as Def Stan 00-55 and IEC 61508 was mandatory, requiring independent review and assurance of software development processes.
SQEP’s Approach
Led by our System Safety Director, SQEP delivered Independent Software Safety Assurance across the client’s AirC2 software portfolio. This included independent safety audits to verify compliance with Def Stan 00-55 and IEC 61508, review and counter-signature of software safety assessments, and assurance of safety artefacts to support Safety Integrity Level (SIL1) claims. SQEP also supported national deployments, ensuring compliance with specific country requirements.
Delivery
The SQEP team conducted comprehensive reviews of software lifecycle processes, evaluated development artefacts and safety documentation, and performed gap analyses against safety standards. We provided recommendations for process improvements, risk mitigation, and ongoing support to internal safety and quality teams to maintain compliance and readiness for external audits.
Outcome
The client achieved full compliance with NATO and national safety requirements, enabling operational readiness of AirC2 systems across multiple European nations. SQEP’s assurance strengthened the safety and reliability of the client’s air picture capabilities, supporting safe and effective operations.
